SENIOR LECTURER / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR IN THE PROGRAMME OF MEDIA STUDIES:

DEPARTMENT OF  COMMUNICATION, MEDIA  AND INFORMATION STUDIES

(ONE POST)

A vacancy for a Senior Lecturer/ Associate Professor / Professor exists for a suitably qualified and experienced individual in the above department. The candidate will be responsible for the implementation of academic operational plans for improving teaching and learning as well as conducting research and community engagement; undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research supervision, and will form part of a dynamic team in the Programme of Media Studies: Department of Communication, Media and Information Studies, in the School of Languages and Communication Studies: Faculty of Humanities.

REQUIREMENTS

  • A Ph.D. in Media Studies, New Media, OR Journalism
  • A minimum of five years of working experience in a tertiary institution
  • An impressive record of publications in SAPSE-accredited and professional journals both nationally and internationally. (At least 10 or more publications for Professor; 5 or more publications for Associate Professor and 2 or more publications for a senior lecturer)
  • Publication of books and chapters in books and book reviews will be an advantage
  • The operational knowledge and competence required for the Digital Advertising and Digital Journalism modules; use of Desktop publishing software such as Adobe Creative Cloud package: InDesign; Photoshop, Illustrator, and QuarkXPress from Quark, Inc.
  • A strong theoretical and practical background in the field of Media Studies, New Media, OR Journalism
  • Experience in postgraduate supervision


DUTIES

The incumbent will be required to:

  • Teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate level according to the needs of the discipline
  • Supervise research for Honours, Masters and Ph.D. students in the discipline
  • Provide academic leadership by guiding and mentoring junior colleagues and graduate students
  • Teach and develop courses in the Programme of Media Studies for courses such as Print journalism, Digital Journalism; Desktop Publishing; Mass Media, Digital Advertising, Writing for the Media, New Media, and Technology, and /or Media and Culture.
  • Participate in community engagement projects
