Senior Lecturer in Media Studies

The Department of Media Studies is seeking to make an appointment at the rank of Senior Lecturer to start in June 2023.

Requirements: Candidates should hold a PhD in media and communication studies or related disciplines and be active researchers with established publication records. We are particularly interested in interviewing candidates with expertise in consumer culture, African media and democracy, decolonial studies, media/journalism culture and practice, digital technology and data science. Candidates should have an appropriate level of experience in departmental academic management and in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels (including postgraduate supervision), and a public profile commensurate with the rank.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be required to offer wide-ranging teaching across all years of study; to implement communicative, student-centred methodologies to facilitate students’ development and growth; to supervise postgraduate students at Honours, MA and PhD level; to be research active in areas related to the discipline; to carry out administrative duties for the department, school and faculty; to contribute to the development of the discipline in South Africa; and to take part in the intellectual and public life of the university.
